How to use Make A Sheet

Everything you need to go from a folder of headshots to a finished, branded contact sheet. No Photoshop. No templates. No account.

๐Ÿ”’

Your photos never leave your device. Ever.

Make A Sheet runs entirely in your browser. When you drop photos into the app, they load directly into memory on your machine. Nothing is uploaded to a server. Nothing is stored in the cloud. We never see your images, your client names, or your work. Close the tab and it's all gone. That's not a feature โ€” that's just how the app is built.

โšก Start here

๐Ÿš€ Getting started

Open the app and you're in. No signup, no loading screen, no tutorial you have to skip. Here's the basic flow:

1

Drop your photos

Drag a folder of headshots into the drop zone on the left, or click to browse. JPEG, PNG, and WebP are all supported.

2

Set your grid

Use the Layout panel to set rows, columns, aspect ratio, and spacing. The canvas updates live as you adjust.

3

Add your logo

Drop your logo in the Logo Area panel. Put it in the header band or drag it anywhere on the canvas in Freeform mode.

4

Export

Hit Export and choose your format. PNG, JPEG, and WebP are free. PDF export (all pages, print-ready) is included with the lifetime license.

๐Ÿ“ Photos

๐Ÿ“ท Adding photos

Drop photos into the left panel or click the drop zone to open a file picker. You can add more photos at any time โ€” they'll append to the end of the grid.

Drag to reorder

Drag thumbnails in the left panel to reorder them. The grid updates immediately.

Swap cells on canvas

Drag one photo directly onto another on the canvas to swap their positions. Only those two photos move โ€” nothing else shifts.

Crop per image

Click any photo on the canvas to open the crop editor. Scroll to zoom, drag to reposition. Default crop is top-biased to keep heads in frame.

Supported formats

JPEG, PNG, WebP. No RAW files. If you're shooting RAW, export JPEGs from Lightroom first.

Tip: For Conference Pro auto-grid to work, filenames need to follow the naming convention. See the Conference Pro section below.
๐Ÿ—‚ Layout

โš™๏ธ Layout controls

The Layout panel controls how photos are arranged on the canvas. All settings update the preview in real time.

Grid vs Masonry

Grid mode

All cells are the same size. Set rows and columns. Clean, uniform, professional. Best for corporate deliverables where every photo needs equal space.

Masonry mode

Photos flow at their native aspect ratio and fill the page naturally. Great for mixed-format shoots or artistic layouts. The rows setting is ignored in masonry mode.

Canvas size

Choose from standard presets or set a custom pixel size. All exports are at the canvas resolution โ€” no upscaling.

Letter (2550ร—3300)

Standard US print. Good for client deliverables that might be printed.

8ร—10 (2400ร—3000)

Default. Works well for digital delivery and most conference use cases.

A4 (2480ร—3508)

International standard. Use this for European clients.

Custom

Set any pixel dimensions you need. Up to 8000ร—8000px.

Orientation, spacing, and margin

Portrait / Landscape

Flips canvas dimensions. Portrait is always on the left, Landscape on the right โ€” the buttons never swap positions.

Gap

Space between cells. Set to 0 for a tight edge-to-edge look, or up to 40px for breathing room.

Cell padding

Inner padding inside each cell. Adds whitespace around each photo within its grid slot.

Grid margin

Outer margin around the entire grid on the canvas. Keeps photos away from the edges.

๐Ÿท Text

โœ๏ธ Names and titles

Names and titles pull from your filenames automatically โ€” no manual entry needed if your files are named correctly.

Filename format

The app reads names and titles from the filename using an underscore as the separator:

Format
Firstname Lastname_Job Title.jpg
โ†’ Name: "Firstname Lastname" ยท Title: "Job Title"
Examples
Sarah Mitchell_VP Marketing.jpg
James Reyes_Senior Engineer.jpg
Amy Chen_Product Manager.jpg
โ†’ Name and title auto-populate in each cell
No underscore? The full filename (minus extension) becomes the name. No title will appear. You can always click any cell on the canvas to edit name and title manually.

Editing names per cell

Click any photo on the canvas to open a popup. Edit name, title, and crop position directly. Changes only affect that cell.

Text styling

Font

Choose from Inter, Helvetica, Georgia, or system defaults. Applies globally to all cells.

Font size

Separate size controls for name and title. Scale independently.

Text color

Set name and title colors independently. White on dark backgrounds, black on light โ€” whatever your client brand needs.

Show / hide

Toggle names and titles on or off globally with a single checkbox.

โญ Lifetime feature

๐ŸŽฏ Conference Pro auto-grid โญ Lifetime

Built for shooters doing large team sessions at conferences and corporate events. Upload up to 200 photos and the app builds the entire grid automatically โ€” names, titles, correct order โ€” from your filenames alone.

1

Name your files correctly before you import

Use the format: Firstname Lastname_Job Title.jpg. The underscore separates name from title. Spaces in names and titles are fine.

2

Drop all your photos in at once

Select everything and drop it in. Conference Pro detects the naming pattern and auto-populates the grid with names and titles.

3

Review the conference banner

A banner appears at the top of the app showing how many people were detected. If duplicates are found (same name, multiple shots), a review button appears so you can pick the right frame per person.

4

Export PDF

Multi-page PDF export handles sheets automatically โ€” 200 people across 5 pages, all formatted consistently, in one export.

Heads up: Conference Pro is a Lifetime license feature. Free accounts can still use the app with up to 50 images โ€” just without the auto-grid and PDF export.
๐Ÿ’พ Export

๐Ÿ“ค Exporting your sheet

Hit the Export button in the top bar to open the export menu. Choose your format and the file downloads immediately to your device.

PNG

Lossless. Best for digital delivery where you want the cleanest image. File size is larger than JPEG.

JPEG

Compressed. Smaller file size, good for email delivery. Slight quality loss โ€” usually unnoticeable at normal viewing sizes.

WebP

Modern format, good compression with quality comparable to PNG. Great for web delivery.

PDF โญ Lifetime

Exports all pages in a single print-ready PDF. Page size matches your canvas preset. Best for final client delivery.

Tip: PNG and JPEG exports save the current page only. PDF exports all pages at once.
๐Ÿ“„ Pages

๐Ÿ“„ Multi-page sheets

When you add more photos than fit on one page, Make A Sheet automatically creates additional pages. Navigate between them with the arrow buttons in the top bar.

Auto pagination

Photos overflow to new pages automatically based on your rows ร— columns setting.

Page navigation

Use the โ† โ†’ arrows in the top bar to move between pages. The page indicator shows "Page X of Y".

Consistent formatting

Logo, text styling, and layout settings apply to all pages. Set it once.

PDF export for all pages

PDF export (Lifetime) packages every page into a single file. Image exports save the currently visible page.

โ“ FAQ

๐Ÿ’ฌ Common questions

I refreshed the page and lost my work. What happened?
Make A Sheet doesn't save sessions โ€” that's the tradeoff for keeping everything local and private. Once you close or refresh the tab, your work is gone. Export before you close. We may add local project save/load in a future update.
My photos are uploading but the grid looks wrong.
Check your rows and columns settings in the Layout panel. If you're in Masonry mode, rows are ignored โ€” switch to Grid mode if you want a fixed layout.
The names aren't showing up on my photos.
Check that "Show name" is toggled on in the Image Name panel. Also make sure your filenames include the person's name โ€” the app can only read what's in the filename.
How do I enter my license key after purchasing?
Click the "Conference Pro" button in the top right of the app. A modal will appear โ€” enter your TNS-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX key and hit Verify. Your key is saved to your browser and will be remembered next time you open the app on the same device.
I switched computers and my license isn't active.
Your key is stored in your browser's localStorage โ€” it doesn't follow you between devices automatically. Just enter your key again on the new device. Check your purchase confirmation email for the key, or email us and we'll resend it.
Can I use this on my iPad or phone?
The app runs in any modern browser including mobile Safari and Chrome on iOS. It works, but it's optimized for desktop where you actually have the photos and the screen space to work with them.
Are my client photos safe?
Yes. Everything runs locally in your browser. No images are ever transmitted to our servers โ€” because we don't have any. Your photos stay on your device the entire time. See the privacy note at the top of this page.
Something is broken. How do I get help?
Email hello@makesheet.com. Include a description of what you were doing and what happened. Screenshots help.
